Eucalyptus polyanthemos subsp. marginalis
RuleSmall tree to 12 m tall, rarely mallee; bark grey-brown, often flaky and loose. Adult leaves ovate, rarely lanceolate, 5–8 cm long, 2–3.3 cm wide, somewhat glossy, blue-green, light green or olive green. Buds non-pruinose.
Wim, VVP, VRiv, OtP, Gold, CVU. Occurs from Kamarooka in the east to Stawell, with southern outliers in the Bacchus Marsh area (Brisbane Ranges and the Pyrete Range) in box-ironbark forest or mallee-box woodlands, generally on dry, gravely soils.
Previously included in Eucalyptus polyanthemos subsp. vestita, but distinguished from that subspecies by its smaller habit, non-glaucous branchlets, leaves and buds, and westerly distribution.
Sometimes erroneously included in E. baueriana subsp. thalassina, possibly because of its lustrous, green adult leaves. Eucalyptus polyanthemos subsp. marginalis is mostly found on elevated sites in poor, well-drained soils, whereas E. baueriana subsp. thalassina occurs along water courses and drainage lines in fertile soils. Eucalyptus polyanthemos subsp. marginalis can be further distinguished by its more or less barrel-shaped, relatively thick-walled fruits and its appreciably coarse, ovate adult leaves.
