Dennstaedtiaceae
Terrestrial ferns. Rhizome creeping or erect, hairy. Fronds relatively large, stipe not easily distinguished from rhizome (not articulated). Stipe woody, usually with one hollow vascular strand (Pteridium has several). Lamina several times pinnate, wider towards base, usually bearing hairs; veins free and anastomosing. Sori superficial or submarginal, terminal on free veinlets, circular or forming linear compound marginal sorus; indusium cup-shaped or 2-lipped (outer lip formed by recurved margins of lamina; inner lip a true indusium, membranous, delicate, sometimes reduced or absent); annulus usually vertical; spores tetrahedral or bilateral.
About 12 genera, mostly from tropical regions; 5 occurring in Australia, with Oenotrichia not represented in Victoria.
