Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves whorled or all basal; stipules small, soon deciduous. Flowers solitary in axils or in umbels; perianth segments 5, equal, free; stamens 3–5, staminodes sometimes present; ovary 3-locular; styles 3, sometimes much reduced. Fruit a membranous, loculicidal capsule; seeds without caruncles or other appendages.
