Lachenalia flava
AndrewsBulb globose, 15–20 mm diam., offset-forming. Leaves 2, lanceolate, 85–150 mm long, 12–30 mm wide, spreading to suberect, fleshy, slightly canaliculate, glabrous, light green, the upper surface plain or sometimes with dark green or light to dark brownish maroon blotches. Scape erect to suberect, 10-20 cm high, fleshy, dull purple or maroon, or light green with large purple blotches,covered with a delicate bloom, few to many-flowered; pedicels 5–7 mm long. Perianth zygomorphic, tubular, mostly pendulous; outer tepals oblong, ca. half or slighty more than half as long as the inner tepals, 13–18 mm long, 7–9 mm wide, golden orange; inner tepals oblong, 26–28 mm long, 9–12 mm wide, overlapping, bright yellow or light orange yellow, apices spreading, apical gibbosities yellow to golden orange. Stamens included. Style included, ultimately exserted. Flowers August to September (in Victoria).
Also naturalised in SA. Endemic to South Africa.
A garden escape. In Victoria, known from a recent (2022) collection from North Goroke State Forest, where adventive among mainly native vegetation.
Lachenalia flava may be confused with yellow-flowered forms of L. aloides, but the inner tepals in L. aloides have white apical margins whereas the apical margins in L. flava are concolorous with the yellow lamina of the tepal.
