Perennial shubshrubs to 1 m high; stems glabrous or papillate. Leaves alternate or opposite, sessile, fleshy, linear. Flowers bisexual, solitary in axis; bracts distinctly swollen at the base when fruiting; bracteoles 2, narrow ovate, subequal to slightly shorter than tepals; tepals 5, narrow ovate, papery, 1-nerved; stamens 2, on one side of the ovary, united for much of their length; ovary unilocular; style notched to bifid. Fruit an indehiscent, membranous utricle; seeds ellipsoid to pear-shaped.
Endemic Australian genus, 2 species. Surreyais a sister taxon to Hemichroa, the two genera differing in anther number.
