Bruchia brevipes
Harv. ex Hook.Autoicous. Gregarious on soil on a persistent light green protonema, to 2 mm tall. Stem simple, 0.5–1 mm tall. Leaves erecto-patent, often twisted, subulate from a broad ovate to lanceolate base, leaves near apex 1.4–2.4 mm long, 0.3–0.6 mm wide, most of length subula, concave; laminal cells of the subula 4–7 times as long as wide, oblong-linear to irregular, 27–40 μm long, 8–11 μm wide, smooth, bistratose; basal laminal cells 10–12 μm wide; costa percurrent; margin entire to irregularly denticulate from shoulder to apex. Seta 0.3–0.5 mm long. Capsule immersed, obovoid, rostrate, 0.6–1.1 mm long, orange. Calyptra smooth. Spores densely spinose, 33–47 μm diam.
Wim, GleP, VVP, CVU, GGr, HSF. Rarely recorded from disjunct locations through the state (e.g. Glenelg River area, Grampians National Park, Gordon and Rawson), but possibly more widespread in open sites with bare damp soil but overlooked due to its small size. Also WA and NSW. South Africa.
