Annual, stems ascending to erect, usually 5–30(–60) cm long, densely pilose, or rarely, subglabrous. Leaves of juvenile plants broadly 3–5-lobed, adult leaves 3–5-lobed with the lobes dissected into acute lanceolate to linear segments, usually 1–4 cm long and wide overall; petioles mostly 1–7 cm long. Flowers 2–3 mm diam., sessile in axils or on pedicels to c. 15 mm long (often elongating in fruit to c. 5 cm); sepals 3–5, elliptic to obovate, c. 2 mm long, pilose on back; petals 2–4, c. spathulate, slightly shorter than sepals, pale yellow-green; nectary attached at or slightly above middle, lobe minute, triangular to obovate, fused with petal along margins; stamens 4–6. Achenes usually 10–20, broad-elliptic, 1.5–2 mm long overall, lenticular; beak obtuse or minutely hooked, c. 0.2 mm long; receptacle glabrous.
