Shrubs or subshrubs; often procumbent; branchlets grayish green or yellowish green. Leaves opposite, c. 2 mm long, sheathing the stem. Male flowers solitary or in clusters of 3; bracts in 4 pairs; staminal column with 7 or 8 anthers. Female flowers narrow ovoid; bracts in 3 or 4 pairs. Fruit 8–9 mm long, red.
Occasionally cultivated in gardens. This species appears to have once been naturalised on the eastern shores of Port Phillip Bay. There are two 1911 specimens labelled as being from Sandringham and North Brighton, the latter noted as having been poisoned. The species has not been recorded as growing wild in the State again.
