Dioecious or monoecious shrubs. Leaves reduced, short with fused sheaths; lacking resin. Cones terminal on short axillary shoots, enclosed by 2–10 decussate pairs of membranous bracts; distal bracts containing flowers with false perianth of two leathery scales. Seed cones developing into swollen, round red or yellow 1–2 seeded fruit.
