A highly polymorphic species of over 14 races, formally named as subspecies, which have geographically and ecologically restricted ranges, some widespread, others very localised; 8 subspecies in Victoria
The various races are distinguished on correlated characters, many of which have overlapping ranges of variation. In some instances there is intergradation between the races on ecotonal zones between habitats or on a geographical basis. Observation and/or measurement of some of the characters described here will require a microscope or hand lens.
