Calochilus
Terrestrial glabrous herbs, arising from ovoid tubers. Leaf solitary, basal, linear, channelled. Flowering stem bracts almost entirely sheathing or with leaf-like lamina, tapered to apical point. Flowers bracteate, dull-coloured, few or numerous, in loose racemes, column uppermost; dorsal sepal broad, erect, hooded; lateral sepals similar in length to dorsal sepal, broad, acute, more or less spreading; petals shorter than sepals, wide, erect or incurved. Labellum sessile, exceeding all other segments in length, undivided, with oblong base and triangular, usually densely bearded lamina, with purple or metallic-coloured hairs. Column short and broad, broadly winged.
About 30 species; 29 occurring in Australia (1 extending to New Guinea and 2 to New Zealand), the other in New Caledonia, 8 in Victoria.
