Bulbous perennial herbs; bulb annual, ovoid, composed of few coalescent scales, completely renewed annually. Leaves basal, flat or channelled. Inflorescence a scapose raceme. Flowers bisexual, pedicellate, each subtended by 2 bracts; perianth segments usually bluish, subequal, shortly united basally, 1-nerved; stamens 6, inserted on perianth, and not exceeding it, filaments somewhat flattened, anthers dorsifixed, versatile, dehiscing introrsely by slits; ovary superior, 3-locular, ovules 1–10 per locule; style simple, stigma capitate. Fruit a loculicidal capsule; seeds ± globose, black.
3 or 4 species in Europe and north-western Africa, 2 naturalised in Australia.
