Two subspecies with subspecies archeri endemic to eastern Australia and the nominate subspecies endemic to New Zealand. The nominate subspecies differs from subspecies archeri by its longer setae which are 3–4.5 cm long and its longer capsules that have thecae 3.5–5 mm long (Touw 1971).
