Shrubs or small trees, glabrous or with simple, peltate or stellate hairs or scales. Leaves alternate, simple, margins entire or toothed. Inflorescences axillary or terminal, cymose or paniculate, or flowers solitary. Flowers bisexual, 5-(rarely 8- outside Victoria)merous; sepals fused into an unlobed or 5-lobed cup, rarely free; petals valvate or imbricate, free or rarely united (not in Victoria), persistent or not in fruit; stamens 10, free, divergent; carpels usually 5, 1-locular, basally fused or free, usually with beak, styles fused, arising from c. middle of ovary, stigma scarcely differentiated from style or capitate, ovules 2 per locule. Fruit follicular, not transversely ridged, apices rounded or beaked; seeds 1 (rarely 2) per follicle, released explosively with elastic endocarp.
