Maireana pyramidata
(Benth.) Paul G.Wilson Sago BushDense, stiffly branched shrub to c. 1 m high; branchlets finely woolly. Leaves alternate, widely spreading, often clustered on short lateral shoots, linear to narrowly oblanceolate, subterete, 2–6 mm long, shortly pubescent with a mixture of dendritic and longer, semi-appressed simple hairs. Flowers bisexual or female, shortly woolly all over. Fruiting perianth 10–15 mm diam., perianth lobes enlarged and raised to a broadly conical apex, minutely pubescent; tube hardly developed, truncate at apex; wing horizontal, thin-textured, inflated and weakly spongy toward centre. Fruits mostly Aug.–Nov.
MuM, Wim, VRiv, MSB, RobP, MuF. WA, NT, SA, Qld, NSW. Occurs in calcareous and/or subsaline soils, usually prone to inundation. Scattered but locally common in far north-western Victoria (e.g. Mildura, Red Cliffs, Lake Culluleraine) but extending southwards along the Murray River to the Kerang-Swan Hill district.
