Corm simple, usually 2–3-lobed, roots dichotomously branched. Leaves quill-like, erect or flaccid. Sporangia attached at bases of sporophyll; megaspores 0.2–0.8 mm diam., white, grey or rarely black.
Over 100 species world-wide; about 15 species in Australia, all but one endemic; 3 in Victoria.
