Tree to 50 m tall; bark smooth over whole trunk, or with thick stocking of rough bark c. 2–6 m above base. Seedling leaves green. Inflorescences usually 3-flowered, rarely more. Fruit to 0.9 cm diam. Flowers Jan.–Apr.
Wim, GleP, Brid, VVP, GipP, OtP, WaP, Gold, CVU, GGr, DunT, NIS, EGL, EGU, WPro, HSF, HNF, OtR, Strz, MonT, HFE, VAlp. Also SA, NSW, Tas. Widespread and common in mountains and foothills both north and south of the Great Dividing Range. Subsp. viminalis overlaps the distributions of both other subspecies and intermediates will occur that cannot be identified to subspecies level.
With E. obliqua, E. viminalis subsp. viminalis is the most widespread eucalypt in south-eastern Australia. It grows to 90 m tall in Tas.
