Sphaeralcea bonariensis
(Cav.) Griseb.Low, much-branched shrub to c. 1 m high; young stems densely stellate-pubescent. Leaves ovate-deltoid, often shallowly 3-lobed, 12–25 mm long, 8–20 mm wide, broadly cuneate at base, margins crenate to dentate, lower surface pale, densely stellate-pubescent. Flowers in corymbose clusters of 2–4; peduncles 5–10 mm long; epicalyx of 3 narrowly subulate deciduous bracts; calyx united in lower third, cup-shaped, densely stellate-pubescent, lobes subulate, 4–6 mm long; petals c. 8 mm long, apparently purplish. Fruit not seen. Flowers Nov.–Dec. (1 record).
Native to South America, recorded once in Victoria in 1959, beside the Melbourne to Geelong railway line and extending into adjacent pasture.
The species has in recent years apparently been located close to the site of the original collection, but no specimen has been lodged at MEL to substantiate this.
