Sphaerolobium
Erect perennial shrubs or subshrubs; stems often rush-like and leafless, terete, often winged or ridged, glabrous. Leaves, when present, simple, alternate, irregularly opposite or whorled, linear, entire, sessile or subsessile; stipules absent. Inflorescence a terminal or axillary raceme or cluster; bracts and bracteoles caducous. Calyx campanulate, 5-toothed; teeth imbricate, upper 2 united higher up forming a falcate lip; petals shortly clawed, yellow or red; standard suborbicular to reniform, emarginate; wings oblong, more or less falcate, shorter than standard; keel obtuse, straight or curved, usually shortest; stamens free; ovary stipitate, glabrous, style incurved, subulate or dilated at base, with a longitudinal membrane or a ring of hairs below the stigma, ovules 2. Pod oblique-globose or compressed, short-stipitate; seeds 1 or 2, ovoid, black or brownish, and exarillate (in Victoria).
About 22 species, all endemic to Australia, with representatives in all States.
