Trees to 15 m high; branchlets usually densely pubescent. Leaves alternate, pinnately compound, c. 15–20 cm long; leaflets 9–17, opposite, oblong, oblong-lanceolate or oblong-oblanceolate, c. 3–6 cm long, 1.5–2 cm wide, margins serrate, often only in distal half, dull green above, densely white-tomentose below; stipules deciduous or persistent. Inflorescence a terminal, many-flowered, corymbose panicle. Flowers 8–11 mm diam.; receptacle (hypanthium) densely pubescent; sepals persistent; petals (3–)4–5 mm long, white; styles 3 or 4, free. Pome globose to subglobose, 8–12 mm diam., initially yellow, turning bright red. Flowers spring–summer.
GipP, VAlp. Also naturalised SA, NSW, Tas. Native to Europe and Asia. Known in Victoria from a single population near Falls Creek Ski Village. Seeds of cultivated plants are apparently spread by birds, with new plants emerging in the surrounding alpine vegetation.
