Widespread in coastal Victoria from Mallacoota to Nelson, inland to e.g. Buchan, Moe, Woodend, the Grampians, Wilkin. Occurs on poorly drained, infertile sites. The distribution of typical E. ovata is at present imperfectly known and the extensive range outlined here doubtless includes populations of intermediates between E. ovata and E. brookeriana.
Also known to hybridise with E. camaldulensis east of Melbourne (see E. ×studleyensis)
The form near Moonlight Head and Cape Otway occurs on better drained, exposed sites and its coarser, larger buds and fruits approach those of subsp. grandiflora.
