Hook.f. Green Bird-orchidFlowering plant 2–4 cm tall (scape elongating to 10 cm or more after pollination). Leaves linear-oblong to oblong-lanceolate, petiolate, more or less fleshy, 30–100 mm long, 10–30 mm wide, bright green. Flower predominantly green with reddish markings; dorsal sepal hooded, ovate-lanceolate, 12–16 mm long; lateral sepals recurved, linear, 10–12 mm long; petals erect, incurved to spreading, 10–12 mm long. Labellum on short claw, usually triangular, 9–12 mm long; calli dark green or reddish, variously arranged, sessile, elongated or flattened. Column widely winged in upper half, the points of the wings higher than the anther. Flowers Oct.–Feb. (self–pollinating).
GleP, VVP, GipP, OtP, WaP, GGr, EGL, EGU, WPro, HSF, HNF, OtR, Strz, MonT, HFE, VAlp. Also SA, NSW, Tas. New Zealand. Occurs chiefly in highland forests on and south of the Great Dividing Range, mostly east of Melbourne, with isolated records from the Portland area, the Grampians and the Otway Range. Extremely shade tolerant and often found in fern gullies where sometimes growing on fibrous-trunked tree-ferns or rotting logs.
Apparent hybrids with C. valida have been observed where the two species are sympatric.
