Rhizomatous perennial to 3 m high; stems annual, erect, reddish-brown, bamboo-like, usually clustered. Leaves broadly ovate, 5–15 cm long, 2–12 cm wide, glabrous, often coarse-textured; apex acuminate to cuspidate; base truncate; petiole 1–3 cm long. Inflorescence axillary, flowers in slender, branched spike-like clusters. Perianth segments to c. 7 mm long, free above c. midway, green to creamy white, glabrous. Nut 2–4 mm long, dark brown to black, smooth.

Native to Asia, occasionally grown as a garden subject, and very rarely noted outside of cultivation in Victoria. A dwarf variant, variety compactais often sold in nurseries.
