(DC.) F.M.Knuth Candle ChollaErect open shrub to 0.5–2.5 m high and to 4 m across, much-branched above the cylindric (3–7 cm diam.), woody trunk. Terminal cladodes cylindric, tuberculate, 5–26 cm long, 0.5–1.2 cm diam., glabrous, dark green to slightly grey-green; tubercles prominent, 1.2–2.5 cm long, 3–4.5mm wide, 3.5–4.5 mm high; areoles 0.5–1.3 cm apart, apical on tubercles, filled with short dense white or pale yellowish wool and small brown glochids; spines 1–4 per areole, often with 1 large spreading or slightly deflexed brown spine, 2–4.5 cm long, 0.4–0.75 mm wide near base, and sometimes with 2 very small weak, white or pale brown deciduous spines around the base of the larger spine, each covered by a papery, tan sheath. Flowers 3.0–4.0 cm diam.; sepaloids brownish pink or greenish pink with reddish or reddish brown margins; petaloids spreading, red to magenta, greenish near base; staminal filaments pale pink above and creamish below, anthers pale yellow; style pale pink to purple pink, whitish toward base, stigma pale yellow to white; hypanthium tuberculate. Fruit obovoid, deeply depressed at apex, 1.5–5 cm long, 1–2 cm diam., strongly tuberculate, spineless or with few deciduous spines, green to yellow, dry, solitary, or rarely proliferating in chains of 3 or 4. Flowers late spring–summer.
MuM. Also naturalised in WA, SA, NSW. Native to southern United States of America (New Mexico, Texas), and Mexico. In Victoria known from a single collection beside railway-line at Yarrara.
