Stunted trees or mallees with large, rounded fruit and very warty buds occur on and approaching the summit area of Mt William in the Grampians. These have been interpreted as being hybrids between E. baxteri and E. serraensis, but their real identity is still unclear. While fairly typical E. baxteri occurs on the lower slopes of Mt William, E. serraensis is generally regarded as being restricted to the adjacent Serra Range. The type specimen of E. alpina, collected from Mt William, although fragmentary, appears to be of the putative hybrid. Further research is required to determine whether the Mt William summit shrubs are really of hybrid origin or perhaps represent a distinct entity, in which case E. alpina would be the correct name.
