Bryophyllum

Perennial herbs or soft-wooded shrubs, usually succulent. Leaves opposite, whorled or alternate (not in Victoria), simple, entire or toothed, or pinnatifid or pinnate, often developing plantlets along the margins. Inflorescence usually a terminal thyrse with 1–several dichasia each ending in monochasial branches. Flowers 4-merious, usually pendulous; calyx connate in a tube, lobes acute; corolla connate in a tube for more than half its length, lobes usually recurved, orange, lilac, red or pink; stamens 8, adnate to base of corolla tube, in 2 whorls of unequal length, exserted; carpels 4, ± free, each with numerous ovules. Fruit a follicle; seeds many, ellipsoid, with longitudinal ridges and transverse striations.
