Herbs to 2 m high. Upper leaves typically with moderately dense cobwebby white hairs on lower surface. Involucre 4.0–6.0 mm long; bracts often purple throughout; peduncles and bracteoles somewhat densely cobwebby or woolly at anthesis; bisexual florets 5–7 mm long; marginal florets 4–6 mm long. Cypselas 1.0–1.7 mm long, mid to dark reddish-brown, uncommonly some greenish; pappus 5–7 mm long. Flowers mostly late spring–autumn.
LoM, MuM, Wim, GleP, Brid, VVP, GipP, OtP, Gold, CVU, GGr, DunT, NIS, EGL, EGU, HSF, HNF, OtR, Strz. Also WA, SA, Tas. Scattered throughout forest, woodland and heathland in the southern half of the state with occassional occurrences in the north.
