Epiphytic, epiphyllous, or less commonly lithophytic or terrestrial, monoicous or dioicous (not in Victoria). Asexual reproduction rarely by caducous branches (not in Victoria) or stems (not in Victoria) or marginal leaf segments (not in Victoria). Stem infrequently or frequently irregularly branching; branches emerging from main stem near and ventral to an unmodified lateral leaf, without or with a lobed and foliose collar at base. Leaves imbricate to distant (not in Victoria), spreading close to substrate, broadly attached to stem; lobe ovate to ovate-falcate or ovate-orbicular, entire to dentate (not in Victoria), rounded or acute (not in Victoria) to apiculate (not in Victoria) at apex; lobule smaller than lobe, sometimes reduced to a few cells in axil, when well-developed inflated, ovate to oblong, fused along basal margin to form an arching keel, ending in a notch, apical margin free, with one marginal tooth; tooth unicellular or occasionally multicellular, with hyaline papilla on margin at base on side facing stem; cells hexagonal to circular, smooth or papillose (not in Victoria), thin-walled, with or without small trigones, sometimes with small intermediate thickenings, with 3–numerous spherical to ellipsoid or fusiform, smooth, finely granular or botryoid oil bodies, never forming ocelli. Underleaves present, one to each pair of lateral leaves, orbicular, ovate, oblong (not in Victoria) or reniform (not in Victoria) in outline, bifid or rarely unlobed (not in Victoria), entire or dentate (not in Victoria), cuneate, rounded or auriculate at base, imbricate to distant; lobes triangular or lanceolate, directed forwards, not divergent; cells hexagonal or pentagonal, thin-walled, with or without small trigones, sometimes with small intermediate thickenings. Perianth pyriform, obovoid, ellipsoid (not in Victoria) or cylindric (not in Victoria), 5-keeled or without keels (not in Victoria), rarely with teeth (not in Victoria) or cilia (not in Victoria) along keel, with or without (not in Victoria) a beak at apex, sessile or shortly stalked.
Widespread through temperate to tropical regions and composed of 387 species (Söderström et al. 2016); four species in Victoria.
