Lycopus australis
R.Br. Australian GipsywortStems erect, to 1.5 m high, usually unbranched, with scattered simple hairs, becoming glabrous; leaves sessile to shortly petiolate, c. lanceolate, 4–15 cm long, 0.8–2.5 cm wide, upper surface with scattered simple hairs, lower surface gland-dotted, apex acute, margins coarsely acutely toothed. Cymes c. sessile, few-many-flowered. Calyx 3.5–5 mm long, gland-dotted, lobes acuminate, 1.6–2.5 mm long, ending in a stiff point; corolla white, often mauve-dotted at the base of each lobe, slightly longer than calyx, lobes c. one-quarter as long as tube; stamens shortly exserted; ovary surmounted on a thick disc. Mericarps obloid or obovoid, c. 2 mm long. Flowers Dec.–Apr.
GleP, VVP, VRiv, GipP, OtP, WaP, Gold, CVU, GGr, DunT, NIS, EGL, EGU, HSF, HNF, OtR, MonT, HFE, VAlp. Also SA, Qld, NSW, ACT, Tas. Common in Victoria on reedy verges of watercourses, lakes and swamps, mostly east of Port Phillip, but with scattered occurrences in the west (e.g. Portland, Glenaire, Geelong areas).
