Slightly succulent, taprooted annual herb with simple spreading or ascending stems. Leaves alternate (rosetted in young plants), petiolate, simple, slightly succulent. Flowers in compact clusters in leaf axils; terminal flower bisexual, others female. Tepals 4, free; stamen 1 or absent; stigmas 2. Fruiting perianth thickened and hard, shed with fruit enclosed. Fruit a utricle, pericarp thickened and hard; seed fused with inner wall of pericarp, testa membranous.
Monotypic, endemic Australian genus.
