Erect or spreading shrub to 0.5 m high. Leaves coriaceous, ovate, 1–2 cm long, 3–10 mm wide, base rounded to slightly cordate, slightly scabrous above, moderately rusty-stellate beneath, margin somewhat recurved and irregularly undulate; petiole 1–3 mm long. Flower erect or pendent, not clasped by subtending leaves; calyx hemispherical, loosely stellate-tomentose with rusty hairs; corolla trumpet-shaped, 1.5–2(–3.4) cm long, red to orange, with paler lobes. Flowers mostly autumn-spring.
LoM, MuM, Wim, GleP, Brid, VVP, Gold, CVU, GGr, DunT. Also SA. Commonly in the understorey of mallee-heath in western Victoria and the Grampians, but also occurring disjunctly to the east around the Bendigo Whipstick area.
In the Grampians this variety hybridizes with var. angustifolia, and in the south-west with var. reflexa and C. alba.
