Allocasuarina diminuta subsp. diminuta
Dioecious or monoecious shrub or small tree, 1–5 m tall, penultimate branchlets woody. Bark smooth. Branchlets ascending, to 23 cm long; internodes 5–12 mm long, 0.6–1.1 mm diam., smooth, often waxy, glabrous in furrows; ribs rounded, sometimes becoming angular. Teeth 6–9, erect to spreading, 0.3–0.5 mm long, usually not overlapping, not withered. Male spikes 5–50 mm long, 5–10 whorls per cm; anther 0.5–0.8 mm long; bracteoles persistent. Cones cylindric, usually longer than broad, on peduncle 2–10 mm long; cone body 5–20 mm long, 5–12 mm diam.; valves usually in several rows, hardly extending beyond cone body, truncate to broadly acute, pyramidal protuberance shorter than bracteole body. Winged seeds 3.5–5 mm long, dark brown.
NIS. Occurs on the tablelands and western slopes of New South Wales, naturalised in Victoria, known from a single population north of Wangaratta, growing in bushland similar to that of naturally occurring populations in New South Wales. The Victorian population has apparently established from planted trees, plants now reproducing via seed and suckers.
3 subspecies occur in New South Wales, subspecies diminuta is distinguished from the other two taxa in its ribs of internodes being consistently rounded, and teeth with straight rather than convex-sided margins.
