Perennial shrubs, glabrous or stellate-pubescent, often glandular, dioecious. Leaves alternate or opposite, simple or 3(–5)-lobed, margins usually coarsely toothed, sessile or petiolate; stipules gland-like. Inflorescences terminal or apparently leaf-opposed spike-like thyrses; males elongate, interrupted, bracteate; females congested, usually few-flowered, bracteate. Male flowers with sepals 4(–5), lanceolate to ovate, valvate; petals and disc absent; stamens 30 or more, crowded on a convex receptacle, filaments short, anthers 2-celled, with an erect terminal appendage, dehiscing longitudinally. Female flowers with sepals 3–6(–8), in 1 or 2 whorls, ovate, imbricate; petals absent; ovary 3-celled, ovule 1 per cell, styles 3, free or shortly connate, mostly 2-fid, papillate. Fruit a more or less globose capsule, 3-lobed, separating into three 2-valved mericarps; seeds 3 per capsule, globose to ovoid, caruncle present.
