Tree to 40 m tall. Bark grey, smooth, becoming scaly and furrowed. Long shoots usually pendulous. Winter bud scales small, curved outward at base. Leaves 25–50 mm long, linear, often broader distally, pale green, becoming dark green with age, radially spreading on long shoots, in fascicles on short shoots. Male cones cylindrical, 5–7 cm long. Female cones ovoid or broad ellipsoid, 7–12 cm long; scales flabellate; apex broadly obtuse. Seeds triangular.

Native to Himalaya, often used for timber and as an ornamental. Commonly grown in Victoria as an ornamental tree, and occasionally escaping cultivation.
