Shrubs, glabrous or with simple hairs. Leaves alternate, simple, margins entire. Inflorescences axillary, 1-flowered. Flowers bisexual; sepals 5, free; petals 5, free, imbricate in bud, persistent; stamens 10, free, pyramidally arranged and incurved over ovary; carpels 5, basally fused, lacking a sterile apex, styles fused, arising subterminally on ovary, stigma globose, ovules 2 per carpel. Fruit of 1–5 follicles; follicles not transversly ridged, apices rounded; seeds shiny, brown, released explosively with elastic endocarp.
