Herb, 0.7–1.3 m high. Leaves 50–80 cm long, 2.5–3.5 cm wide; midvein prominent, asymmetric. Inflorescence simple or 2-branched basally, often with purple tinge, flowers subsecund, 12–30-flowered. Primary bracts membranous, maroon. Flowers mostly red, with abaxial segments green to red. Perianth tube 3.0–3.3 cm long, narrow for 6–10 mm basally, segments arising at about the same level; adaxial lobe 2.7–4.0 cm long, linear-spathulate; other lobes 0.5–0.8 cm long. Anthers exserted, dark purple. Style exserted.
GipP, CVU, EGU, HSF. Native to South Africa, naturalised in Victoria, plants escaping from nearby gardens.
