Calotis scapigera

Tufted, stoloniferous, glabrous to sparsely strigose perennial, to c. 30 cm high. Basal leaves narrow-oblanceolate to nearly linear, 4–20 cm long, 1–8 mm wide, usually entire, rarely with a few distant teeth; scape leaves linear, to 5(–10) mm long. Scapes unbranched (very rarely 1- or 2-branched); capitula 10–15 mm diam.; involucral bracts obovate, 3–4 mm long; ray florets 20–40, 2.5–5.5 mm long, white, sometimes flushed pink beneath; disc florets sterile. Cypsela body c. 2 mm long, pale to mid-brown, pubescent at apex, the faces smooth, tuberculate or minutely hispid; awns 5–8, stout, 1–4 mm long, subequal or more commonly 2 spreading at right angles to plane of compression of cypsela body, and those above the 2 marginal ridges shorter and often decurved.
