Bazzania
Epiphytic or on logs, rarely lithophytic or terrestrial, dioecious. Asexual reproduction rarely by caducous leaves. Stems prostrate, rarely erect (not in Victoria), dichotomously branched, with two ranks of lateral leaves and a single rank of underleaves; branches emerging abaxial to lateral leaf with fewer lobes and without a collar of tissue at base or emerging from axils of normal underleaves and with a collar of tissue at base, those of the last type usually with much smaller leaves. Lateral leaves oblong or ovate to falcate in outline, often asymmetric due to more arching acroscopic margin, tridentate-trilobulate at apex, less often bidentate-dilobulate at apex, incubous, imbricate, widely spreading, entire to dentate, collectively green, yellowish green or brownish, unistratose; lobule triangular, acute or obtuse. Underleaves smaller than lateral leaves, ovate to quadrate in outline, undivided to trilobulate, dentate, remote to imbricate, free or fused at base on one or both sides to nearest lateral leaves. Leaf cells polygonal, oblong or quadrate, usually more elongate toward basal centre, sometimes becoming more elongate toward basiscopic margin (not in Victoria) or sometimes abruptly becoming more elongate along mid-line forming a vitta, smooth or occasionally verruculose, firm-walled, often with distinct trigones, with 2–8 spherical, fusiform or ellipsoid and homogenous to granular-botryoidal oil bodies. Androecia comprising short branches emerging from abaxial side of stem, each bract with 1–2 antheridia. Sporophyte at apex of short branch emerging from abaxial side of stem or occasionally microphyllous branch, surrounded by usually 3–5 pairs of bracts. Perianth fusiform, terete at base becoming trigonous toward mouth; mouth entire to dentate. Capsule ellipsoid, 4–6-stratose; elaters 2–3-spiral. Spores spherical, vermiculate to granulate, brown.
Temperate to tropical regions throughout the world, with 258 species (Söderström et al. 2016); three species in Victoria.
