Perennial, climbing trailing or prostrate herbs or undershrubs. Leaves alternate, 1–5-foliolate (1-foliolate in Victoria); stipules small, striate; stipellae small. Inflorescence an axillary raceme; flowers usually in pairs or small clusters, violet, white or pinkish with a yellow or green spot on standard; bracts stipule-like or small, usually caducous, sometimes absent; bracteoles absent; calyx campanulate, teeth 5, shorter than tube, upper 2 fused; standard more or less orbicular; wings nearly as long as standard; keel obtuse, shortest; upper stamen free, lower 9 connate into an open sheath, anthers alternately long and short; ovary many-ovuled, style incurved, gradually attenuate, glabrous, stigma terminal. Pod oblong, compressed or cylindric, with (in Victoria) or without pithy partitions between seeds; seeds arillate.
