Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, linear to oblong, somewhat fleshy. Flowers bisexual, sessile, solitary or clustered in axils of leaves or bracts; perianth cup-shaped, 5-lobed; stamens 5; style short, bifid. Perianth enlarging in fruit, sometimes the lobes developing horizontal spines or wings dorsally; pericarp membranous.
About 30 species from the Northern Hemisphere and Africa; 2 species naturalised in Australia.
