Andreaea flexuosa subsp. flexuosa
Dense turves on rocks. Stems 2.5–5 (–9) mm long. Leaves erect-spreading when moist, slightly appressed when dry, flexuose-twisted especially when moist, linear-lanceolate, 0.8–1.5 mm long, 0.2–0.25 mm wide; apices acute or rounded; costae absent; margins entire, incurved near base; cells in apical half rounded to quadrate, 3–5 μm long, 4–6.5 μm wide, at mid-leaf 12–18 (–20) μm long, (3–) 4–6.5 μm wide, unistratose or bistratose in sporadic spots, smooth; cells at base rectangular, 15–25 (–32) μm long, (3–) 4–6.5 (–8) μm wide. Perigonial paraphyses absent. Perichaetial leaves convolute and sheathing, similar length to vegetative leaves. Pseudopodium c. 0.7–1 mm long. Capsules elliptic, 0.4–0.7 mm long, 4-valved, dehiscence slits from apex to two thirds the distance to base. Turgid spores 22–32 μm diameter; shrivelled spores 18–22 μm diameter.
Recorded from exposed rocks in the alpine zone on Mt Buller and the Dargo High Plains and from peaks in the Grampians. New Zealand, New Guinea, Madagascar, southern South America, southern Africa, Hawaii, Gough and Falkland Islands and Reunion.
