Dioicous. Dense turfs on soil, often reddish, 10–30 mm tall. Leaves obovate to ovate, 6–8 (–9) mm long; costa percurrent to excurrent; margin coarsely serrate, revolute toward base, with a well-defined border at least in basal half, sometimes weak or absent in apical half; laminal cells in apical half rhomboidal; basal laminal cells rectangular. Seta 30–60 mm long. Capsules pendulous, oblong-cylindric, to 6 mm long.
Known from a single 1853 Mueller collection from Muddy Creek which is assumed to be in Victoria because the date of collection matches when he was collecting between Bunyip River and Traralgon in Victoria. However, the closest Rhodobryum aubertii collections outside of Victoria are from north-east New South Wales and given the long period of no further records of this species in Victoria, its presence in Victoria seems dubious. Also Lord Howe Island and QLD. India.
