Differs from the typical variety in the lemma which has a fine dorsal awn attached at or near the base, usually shortly exceeding the spikelet, and a hairy (cf. glabrous) callus, with a few hairs occasionally present also on the body of the lemma. Awned and unawned spikelets may be found within the same inflorescence. Flowers Nov.–Apr.

Wim, VVP, VRiv, GipP, Gold, CVU, GGr, DunT, NIS, EGL, EGU, HSF, HNF, OtR, VAlp. Occurs occasionally throughout the range of the species in Victoria, i.e. widespread in all but the drier north-west, but less common than the typical variety.
