Artemisia
Annual, biennial or perennial herbs, subshrubs or shrubs, aromatic, virtually glabrous or variously hairy. Leaves cauline, alternate, lobed or pinnate, rarely entire. Capitula pedunculate, hemispherical, in terminal panicles, racemes or corymbs; involucral bracts 2–4-seriate, equal or unequal, herbaceous or with scarious margins; receptacle flat or conical, sometimes pilose. Florets all tubular; outer series female or bisexual; corolla indistinctly 2–4-lobed or truncate, oblique at apex; style bilobed, branches linear, truncate, papillose at apex. Inner florets bisexual or functionally male; corolla usually 5-lobed; anthers acute at base with a linear-lanceolate to triangular appendage. Cypselas obovoid, somewhat compressed, glabrous or hairy; pappus a small scarious ring, or absent.
About 388 species, mostly from the Northern Hemisphere but also South America and South Africa; 2 species naturalised in Australia.
