Tufted or shortly rhizomatous glabrous annual or perennial, culms ascending or erect. Leaf-blades scabrous, flat or folded, to 40 cm long, 2-8 mm wide; ligules obtuse, 4-8 mm long. Inflorescence an open panicle, to 25 cm long, the lower branches tardily becoming free from the upper leaf-sheath. Spikelets 4-7 mm long (excluding awn), usually purplish; glumes acuminate, subequal or the lower slightly longer, keeled, scabrous along the keel, smooth on the sides; lemma 2.5-4.5 mm long, glabrous except for callus tuft, and shining, 2-4 toothed at apex, the outer teeth up to 1.5 mm long; awn bent, usually about twice as long as lemma and attached at about the middle of the lemma; palea two-thirds to three-quarters as long as lemma, narrowly bifid; rachilla bristle plumose, more than half as long as lemma, to nearly equal; anthers 0.6-1.5 mm long. Flowers Sep.–Dec.
