Lithophytic, terrestrial or on logs or roots, monoecious or dioecious with male and female plants similar. Asexual reproduction by gemmae produced on adaxial surface near apex. Thallus erect or prostrate, irregularly monopodially branching or regularly pinnate to multipinnate, pale to dark green, circular, elliptic, hemispheric, biconvex or falcate in cross-section, when falcate adaxially cochleate, smooth, papillose or roughened by striations, rarely covered with hairs (not in Victoria) or with longitudinal crests abaxially (not in Victoria); lobes to 4 mm wide; margins obtuse to acute; apices rounded, emarginate or with two overlapping lobes; thallus cells often with up to 15 large spherical, ovoid or elliptic oil bodies, sometimes restricted to hypodermal cells. Antheridia on short lateral branches, in adaxial indentations in two regular rows. Sporophytes adaxial or marginal on well-developed short lateral branches; calyptra fleshy, without scales or hairs. Spores finely papillose; elaters unispiral.
