Gomphocarpus cancellatus

Shrub to 1 m high; stems stout, pubescent. Leaves ovate-oblong, 3–7 cm long, 1–4 cm wide, apex usually obtuse, mucronate, base obtuse to truncate, margins thickened, leathery, prominently reticulate-veined, glabrous except for hairs on veins and margins; petiole 1–5 mm long. Inflorescences usually 6–20-flowered; peduncles mostly 2–4 cm long, erect, pubescent. Pedicels 15–30 mm long, pubescent, erect at anthesis, deflexed in fruit; sepals ovate, 3–5 mm long, free almost to base, pubescent; corolla-lobes ovate, 4–6 mm long, white and glabrous inside, purplish and pubescent outside; corona-lobes incurved, white with a pinkish base. Follicles ovoid-acuminate, 7–8 cm long, 2–3.5 cm diam., erect at maturity, outer surface pubescent and usually covered with soft spines c. 5 mm long, inner surface smooth and shiny; seeds c. 6 mm long, c. 3 mm wide, coma hairs c. 3 cm long.
