Caladenia ×variabilis
NichollsFlowering plant 11–30 cm tall. Leaf 9–14 cm long, c. 5 mm wide. Flowers 1 or 2; perianth segments 3–4 cm long, cream or yellow with brown and red markings, lateral sepals and petals spreading, sometimes deflexed, the sepals divergent or crossed; sepals flattened at base, 3–5 mm wide, tapered to a tail covered in sessile, crowded glands; petals shorter than sepals, flattened at base, tapered to glandular or eglandular tip. Labellum curved forward with lateral lobes hardly incurved or decurved, lamina cordate, obscurely 3-lobed, 12–15 mm long and 8–9 mm wide (when flattened), yellow with dark brown markings; margins of lateral lobes fringed towards apex with short calli up to 1.5 mm long, margins of mid-lobe usually entire and thickened; lamina calli in 4 crowded rows, hardly extending onto mid-lobe, stout, variable in shape, c. 2 mm long, decreasing in size towards apex. Flowers Sep.–Oct.
GipP, OtP. Confined to the south Gippsland area in heathy woodland and coastal scrub on sandy soil.
A natural hybrid between C. orientalis and C. tessellata. Apparent backcrosses between C. ×variabilis and C. orientalis have also been reported.
