Disphyma
Prostrate perennial subshrubs, commonly rooting at nodes. Leaves opposite, shortly connate at base, commonly clustered on short lateral shoots, terete to obtusely 3-angled (rarely 1 or 2 angles acute). Flowers terminal, solitary or 2 or 3 together, pedicellate; sepals 5, 2 subopposite, larger and leaf-like, 3 smaller and sometimes with membranous margins; petaloid staminodes and stamens numerous, in 1–several series, staminodes purplish, white at base; styles 5, stigmas long-awned, densely plumose; ovary inferior 5-locular; ovules numerous, parietal. Fruit a 5-locular capsule; valves winged; locules partly covered by an elastic, membranous 'roof', the bilobed placental tubercle obscuring the aperture in the roof; seeds ovate, smooth to papillose.
Monotypic genus occurring in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.
