Terrestrial, lithophytic, or on logs (not in Victoria), dioicous with female and male plants of similar size or rarely male plant much smaller than female plant (not in Victoria). Asexual reproduction rarely by gemmae produced on adaxial thallus (not in Victoria). Thallus prostrate, simple or irregularly branched, adaxially flat and convex abaxially (not in Victoria) or concave adaxially, sometimes with erect to incurved margins, pale green, yellow-green or rarely colourless (not in Victoria), smooth, glabrous; lobes to 12 mm wide; margin acute; cells with numerous spherical, colourless and granular botryoidal oil bodies at least in hypodermis. Antheridia sunken in chambers on short lateral branches, in two (not in Victoria) or several irregular rows. Sporophytes on poorly-developed lateral branches, on the abaxial side of thallus margin; calyptra clavate or cylindric (not in Victoria), hairy (not in Victoria) or glabrous, smooth or tuberculate. Capsules ellipsoid to cylindric (not in Victoria). Spores papillose or rarely areolate (not in Victoria), shed singly or rarely in tetrads (not in Victoria); elaters unispiral.
Scattered throughout the world from subantarctic islands and the arctic to tropical regions, with 49 species (Söderström et al. 2016); one species, A. rodwayi Hewson, in Victoria.
